Ghent, Belgium, 2019

Nestled amidst the picturesque Flemish fields around Ghent, the project is the result of a meticulous restoration carried out over a period of two years. The residence embraces the rich cultural heritage of the region, marrying traditional charm with contemporary elegance. The timeless retreat not only harmonizes the past and present but also encapsulates the essence of the region, weaving a harmonious blend of contemporary sophistication into every corner.

On the ground floor, the living room exudes charm and coziness, while a bay window offers views of the green surroundings. The cabinet of curiosities reveals a fascinating collection of rare and peculiar objects, a world representing a time of discovery, humanism and science but also a realm permeated by older ideas of magic and sympathy. In the dining room, a rectangular space featuring a round center table, various artworks and objects give depth and meaning to the environment.

The upper floor encompasses the master suite and office, each room telling a unique story. The bedroom, creating a meditative and serene atmosphere akin to a silent retreat, smoothly flows into the en suite dressing room and bathroom, transitioning from a warm beige to a broken white. A rounded space is punctuated by a rare Caldas lounge chair juxtaposed to a South Arabian alabaster figurine and an early painting by Yun Hyong-keun. The office’s dark atmosphere serves as an intellectual space in contrast with the oak floor, reflecting the light into the dark space. The library within contributes to the ambiance with earthy-toned artifacts.
