A rare and refined example of Belgian modernist design, this octagonal center table was designed by Jan Vlug for Bergwood in the 1970s.

Executed in wengé wood and lacquered metal, the table reflects both the designer’s architectural sensibility and his close association with Jules Wabbes.

The octagonal tabletop features an intricate end-grain wood technique composed of wengé blocks arranged in precise rectangular sections, a technique closely linked to Wabbes’ work. This method, often associated with Wabbes, lends the piece a sophisticated texture and pattern.

The geometric metal base is composed of three interlocking frames, each formed by three geometrically positioned legs. This results in a rhythmic, architectural effect typical of Vlug’s designs.

Sculptural and restrained, this table exemplifies the convergence of artisanal craftsmanship and modernist clarity in postwar Belgian design.
