José Zanine Caldas Low Table

This low table by José Zanine Caldas, Brazil, circa 1978, continues the sculptural language the designer developed across his celebrated "Denúncia" body of work. The top is cut from a single, solid slab of pequi wood, its considerable 13 cm thickness anchoring a form whose organic, irregular contours trace the natural silhouette of the trunk it came from. It rests on three wooden supports, their inner edges gently rounded, a quiet counterpoint to the whimsical, freeform mass above. The table reflects Zanine Caldas's belief that a tree's own form, left largely undisturbed, carries a beauty no design could have planned.
