José Zanine Caldas Lounge Chair

Carved from a single piece of wood, this remarkable chaise longue by José Zanine Caldas traces a fluid line from foot to headrest, its undulating curves and rounded silhouette sculpted into an elegant, deliberate form. This unique piece belongs to the designer's celebrated Denúncia body of work. Zanine Caldas let the wood's own mass and grain guide his hand, working the trunk into shape rather than imposing an unrelated design onto it, so that no two pieces from the series were ever quite alike.

Below the seat, a reinforcement wedge, cut in the manner of a dovetail joint, has been set into the wood, almost certainly for structural solidity given the scale and weight the solid trunk carries at that point. Whether it was part of the original construction or added later remains unclear, though either way it sits comfortably within a design language that never sought to disguise the piece’s own history.

Certified piece.
